The idea for the produce box popup came from my experience ordering a CSA box for my household of 2 and being overwhelmed by the amount of food, most of which needed to be cooked as soon as possible. What if a bunch of friends got together to cook the food? We could either enjoy a great meal, or each take home some meals for the week, or both.
The food we prepare is simple, vegetarian, and often vegan. Growing awareness about the poisonous sources of most of our food is leading many to choose not to eat meat, but balancing this with the speed of life is difficult and requires capital. We offer this meal on a sliding scale to share the mission of bringing healthy food back to the city with our friends who could not afford to eat at an "organic" price.
The South Central Farmers have been working to bring healthy food to urban communities for years, through many obstacles that continue to this day. The popup supports their work by buying their produce at full price, and offering a real time venue for sharing prepared meals centered on what is in season. Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is about making sure that the farmers doing the work to create an alternative to industrial food are able to sell their produce without competing with larger operations.
This is a work in progress. One aspect of the popup that supports its mission is its informality. This is not a restaurant where you will be waited on. Please serve yourself, bus your plate, and donate an amount you think is fair. After the cost of food has been covered, donations are divided between our host, TiGeorges, and the cooks. We are a community nourishing each other through responsible participation. Our cooperation adds to the health of the meal and deepens our connection to the source of our food and to each other.
